13 reasons: You broaden your view of the people around you. You learn so much more about your own language - and you understand the complexities of your language. You can communicate with more people. You have more job opportunities if you speak another language - international business, NGOs, international organizations (UN, Int’l Red Cross, etc.) Greater appreciation for other cultures. Dreaming in your second language - it’s due to happen if you study the language long enough and it’s pretty cool when it happens You sound really cool when you can rattle off something in another language. The ability to sing familiar songs in another language (for me, Head, Shoulders, Knees, and Toes became Tête, Épaules, Genoux, Pieds) Traveling to another country and being able to communicate effectively. Reading great works of literature in their original language. With the language comes the culture…and with the culture comes the FOOD. Enough said. Creating a mashup of your primary language and your secondary language - I’m all about some franglais! It’s so much fun! Seriously, I have loved learning French since I started when I was 11. I don’t regret staying with it at all. There were times that I wanted to give it up (that was parce que my prof was un peu folle.) But it’s opened up great opportunities for me. And the language learning hasn’t stopped. I started learning Welsh a few months ago (and I need to pick it back up…silly me starting learning right before I got married). I want to learn Italian, Swedish, Spanish, German, and many more languages. Go learn another language. =)
